Saksham Sharma, Infosys, wins an iPod for the best circle
Saksham Sharma, a User Interface Designer at Infosys, was declared the proud winner of a brand-new iPod Shuffle for drawing the best freehand circle at Soliton's stall at 'Startup City', Bangalore. Mr. Sharma was awarded a score of 93 by
Spot-ItTM, India's first 'smart camera', on the basis of image processing algorithms that measured the standard deviation of the drawn circle and gave it a weighted score out of a hundred. After being confirmed the winner of the competition, Mr. Sharma let us in on how he managed to beat the hundreds of other professionals who tried their hand at drawing the best circle - "By keeping an imaginary point in mind and trying to maintain a constant radius while drawing around it, you can draw a pretty great circle by hand."
Allowing Spot-It to judge the 'perfection' of the circle was the ideal way to explain, in no time at all, the basics of image processing and machine vision to the imaging novice. While manufacturers use the reconfigurable Spot-It system to foolproof their production and assembly lines, a special script was created to decide who would ultimately be the recipient of the iPod shuffle. Interested visitors to the stall were also introduced to Spot-It's simple configuration style user interface that gives the user control over image processing tools like edge detection and blob analysis without the need to learn any programming syntax.
Erratic power supply and outages resulted in a slight commotion but these irregularities were quickly corrected and at the end of the day, the grand prize of the iPod shuffle was rightly awarded to the best artist of the day - Mr. Saksham Sharma.
